Structured Credit Risk - Credit Approver (Paris) | Credit Risk Manager (f/m/d)
HSBC’s purpose is to open up a world of opportunity. Within an inclusive and accessible environment, we enable colleagues to apply their expertise, challenge constructively, and support responsible growth.
What you will do
This role sits within HSBC Continental Europe Wholesale Credit Risk Management (HBCE WCRM), in the Structured Credit / Wholesale Credit Approval team based in Paris.
HBCE WCRM is responsible for the oversight and approval of credit risk across France and HBCE’s subsidiaries and branches in Continental Europe. As a Structured Credit Risk Credit Approver, you will provide independent, well-reasoned credit judgement across structured transactions (Leveraged Acquisition Finance, Financial Sponsors, Commercial Real Estate) and complex counterparties, ensuring alignment with risk appetite, policy, and delegated authority.
Your key responsibilities will include
- Credit approval / challenge: Review, challenge, recommend and (within delegated authority) approve structured credit proposals, ensuring the risk/return profile is acceptable and fully evidenced.
- Structuring and documentation focus: Assess transaction structures (e.g., subordination, security package, cashflow waterfall, covenants, jurisdictional considerations), and set clear approval conditions.
- Portfolio stewardship: Own and actively manage a defined portfolio of structured exposures, including periodic reviews, monitoring of covenants/triggers, and timely escalation of deteriorating trends.
- Early risk identification: Proactively identify emerging risks (market, sector, model, correlation, concentration, liquidity, ESG/reputational), and drive appropriate mitigants to protect the Bank.
- Risk appetite and governance: Contribute to risk appetite calibration, deal guidelines, portfolio concentration analysis, and product/sector reviews; ensure decisions are consistent with the Group’s credit culture (conservative, constructive, and competitive).
- Stakeholder engagement: Partner with Relationship Management, Product, Structuring, Legal, Portfolio Management and Group colleagues to shape pipelines responsibly—bringing practical solutions while maintaining independence of risk judgement.
- Responsible banking lens: Provide input on environmental, social and reputational risks in proposals and ongoing monitoring, escalating where required.
Apply if you match these qualifications
- Degree (Bachelor’s/Master’s) in finance, economics, business or a related discipline.
- Experience in corporate credit or structured credit transactions with a strong grasp of credit fundamentals (cashflow analysis, leverage, collateral, and legal/documentation concepts).
- Proven ability to operate in high-paced approval environments, prioritising competing demands without compromising risk discipline.
- Ability to communicate risk clearly—translating technical credit concerns into actionable conditions for the business.
- Sound judgement, resilience, and the confidence to challenge constructively and negotiate mitigants.
- Strong financial/accounting skills; comfort with stress/scenario analysis and portfolio analytics.
- Fluent English (written and spoken); French is an advantage.
