About the Project – REACH

REACH is an industrial–academic R&D project dedicated to the construction of a low-field MRI demonstrator. Funded by Bpifrance, the project brings together Chipiron (Paris, chipiron.co ) and the Centre for Magnetic Resonance at the University of Bordeaux ( rmsb.u-bordeaux.fr ).

The application context of the project is the development of a preclinical MRI system for small-animal imaging, with the objective of breast cancer detection, monitoring, and the optimized integration of contrast agents.

Research Objectives

The objective of this position is to achieve full operability of a new low-field MRI instrument, enabling the acquisition of high-quality images under preclinical conditions, with acquisition times compatible with in vivo small-animal imaging.

The system is composed of:

  • A 10 mT magnet

  • Magnetic field gradients

  • A radiofrequency chain operating in the 10 kHz–1 MHz range (transmission and reception)

  • A spectrometer (console)

The recruited researcher will be responsible for ensuring communication between the different system components, enabling the design and implementation of acquisition protocols. This work will be carried out in close collaboration with a second researcher specialized in MRI methods, to jointly develop acquisition and post-processing solutions.

Scientific Scope & Themes

This project lies at the intersection of:

  • Electronics

  • Magnetism

  • Magnetic Resonance instrumentation

  • Biological and clinical applications

within a strong university–industry collaboration framework.

Main Activities

  • Assembly of instrument components

  • On-site characterization of system components

  • Design and construction of radiofrequency coils and electronics (transmit and receive)

  • Implementation of communication between system components on the acquisition console

  • Signal and image measurements, and development of instrumentation improvement processes

  • Setup and optimization of acquisition protocols involving contrast agents

  • Cooperation with an MRI methods specialist for acquisition and post-processing protocol development

  • Close interaction with Chipiron to support the emergence of new product solutions and their future commercialization

Research Environment

The RMSB (UMR 5536) has recognized expertise in low-field MRI, particularly Overhauser-enhanced MRI (OMRI).

The research environment includes:

  • Physicists, engineers, and physico-chemists with experience in developing new instruments and acquisition/post-processing protocols

  • Access to higher-field MRI platforms through the IBIO biomedical imaging facility

Career Development & Impact

Given the industry–university cooperative nature of the project, the recruited researcher will consolidate their expertise to pursue careers as:

  • Research scientist

  • R&D engineer

  • Project leader

in a wide range of environments, in both the public and private sectors.

Working Conditions & Safety

  • Work based at RMSB, Bordeaux, in close collaboration with Chipiron (Paris)

  • All safety conditions are ensured in accordance with current regulations

  • Dedicated health and safety training provided upon arrival

  • No major risks associated with the research activities
