The IEA operates as an autonomous body within the framework of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Both the OECD and the IEA seek opportunities to work with an increasing number of non-members of growing importance to the world economy. IEA's Information Systems Unit (ISU) provides the IT infrastructure, systems, and applications that support the IEA's core substantive work, including the management of energy statistics databases and related applications. The IEA is seeking to crate a talent pool for Data Engineer positions potentially upcoming in the next 12 months. Data Engineers will work on the ongoing modernization of the IEA's data architecture. This role will allow for candidates to work on a high-performance, scalable, and cost-effective centralized data platform-grounded in data warehouse principles and modern engineering practices-to deliver reliable, high-quality data to energy analysts and economists for in-depth market research and analysis. Successful candidates will be given and opportunity to be considered for potential upcoming positions which may start as early as January 2026. Data Engineers will work under the supervision of the Lead Data Solution Architect and the Head of the Information Systems Unit. Job Description Main Responsibilities
- Work with ISU and other teams to analyse, develop, test and deploy optimised, data and business intelligence solutions to help manage our growing data infrastructure.
- Collaborate with engineers and data analysts to build and maintain Python-based backend services that support data processing and AI applications.
- Contribute to the development of internal tools such as chatbots, semantic search engines, or dataset assistants using modern AI frameworks.
- Assist in the implementation and improvement of data pipelines, APIs, and vector search systems under senior guidance.
- Participate in projects that integrate language models (LLMs) like GPT or LLaMA into secure applications that respect confidentiality and data sovereignty.
- Help containerize applications using Docker and support deployment in our hybrid (cloud + on-prem) environment.
- Support testing, code reviews, and documentation of key software components.
- Learn about our data warehouse ecosystem and contribute to projects that improve data access, validation, or reporting.
- Work with senior engineers to identify innovative uses of AI and build small prototypes that can evolve into production tools..
- Secure AI Assistant for Reports: Help build tools that allow IEA staff to ask questions and retrieve insights from internal reports, using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and LLMs.
- Data Validation Pipelines: Support the creation of automated checks that align datasets with the narratives of official publications.
- Open-Source LLM Experiments: Assist in experimenting with self-hosted models like Mistral or LLaMA and deploy them on-prem using tools like vLLM and LangChain.
- Internal Python Libraries: Contribute to shared Python codebases that make our data processing more consistent and reusable.
- Maintaining the IEA Data Warehouse: Participate in the upkeep and improvement of our SQL Server-based data warehouse, helping to ensure data integrity, optimize queries, and support analytics and reporting pipelines used across the agency.
- Undergraduate degree or higher in Computer Science, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Management Information Systems, Data Management, or a related field.
- 3+ years of experience in data engineering, infrastructure, or software development.
- Very good programming skills in Python, with a good grasp of software engineering principles.
- Skilled in agile delivery, version control, testing, and CI/CD.
- Interest in learning how to work with tools like Docker, Git, Milvus, Azure, or Hugging Face Transformers.
- Experience building data-driven applications or APIs, with awareness of usability and long-term maintainability.
- Familiarity with developing user-facing tools in Dash.
- Strong grasp of ETL design, data pipelines (e.g., Dagster), and SQL-based data warehousing.
- Experience with Linux systems, virtualization (e.g., Hyper-V, VMware), and general server management.
- Strong knowledge of SQL and data modeling is a plus.
- Strong desire to work in a mission-driven environment and grow your technical skills with real mentorship.
- Demonstrated self-motivation and ability to work independently as well as to work collaboratively and effectively in small technical/engineering teams
- Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English; working knowledge of French would be an advantage.
- This vacancy should be filled by the beginning of 2026, and applications should reach us no later than midnight August 17, 2025 (Paris time).

- IEA offers a fixed-term contracts initially for 24 months, with the possibility of renewal.
- Depending on level of experience, monthly salary starts at 5,185.99 EUR, plus allowances based on eligibility, exempt of French income tax.
